Wanaka

A day to prepare for the hike to Aspiring Hut was filled with church in the morning, followed by a day hike along the other side of the lake and then some shopping for food.

I went to a local Presbyterian church in town that had a great view of the mountains through non-stain glassed windows. Instead of darkening the view, the clear glass was etched. The people were very friendly and we all shared tea and cookies in the lobby after the service.

The lakefront was warm and still, only interrupted by the navagation of a slollom course via jet boat by the contestants of the Speights Perfect Woman Competition entering its second day of festivities.

Walking along the lake front there were all the typical activities of an unusually warm Spring day: biking (complete with friendly pooch), rollerblading, picnics, water ski diehards, and of course the requisite teens getting their car stuck trying to put a boat in the water by avoiding the line at the launch ramp.

The friendliness of the people continues to amaze. While walking along the rocky shore I met a family of water skiers who almost insisted that I give it a try, despite their obvious uncontrollable shaking from the chill of the water. My way out was to jokingly say that “I didn’t want to be rude and ski ahead of the Mom, so I’ll go right after her.” There was no way she was getting in that freezing water so everything was safe.

There is so much natural wonder to take in. Given the spring season, ducklings cruised the shore. There were very cute and determined in their trudging through the pebbled shore.

As is now appearing typical, the scenery didn’t disappoint.
